Amazon Turns Tide By Hiring Thousands Of Workers As Locked-On Brits Online Shopping Explodes

Amazon is one of the small group of companies that have profited tremendously from the coronavirus pandemic.

Tech giant Amazon will add 7,000 permanent jobs to its UK workforce by the end of 2020, boosting its hiring wave for the year.

The e-commerce company has already created 3,000 permanent jobs in the UK this year, as well as thousands of temporary positions. In addition to those permanent jobs, Amazon plans to hire an additional 20,000 seasonal workers before the winter vacation rush.

It comes as companies around the world are laying off workers in the wake of the coronavirus crisis. With millions of people still stuck at home due to the coronavirus, e-commerce businesses are doubling in the face of increased demand for online shopping. Amazon, with the online grocer Ocado OCDO,

In the UK, Amazon competes fiercely to meet this demand, particularly in the grocery sector, where it competes directly with Ocado and Tesco TSCO,

The additional jobs bring Amazon’s total UK workforce to over 40,000 and focus on three new high-tech fulfillment centers that will absorb more than 1,000 new employees each.

UK Business Secretary Alok Sharma called the move a “clear vote of confidence in the UK economy” as the country grapples with the economic effects of the coronavirus.

Amazon is one of the small group of companies that have profited tremendously from the coronavirus pandemic. Millions of people stuck at home have turned to online shopping for necessities and distractions, increasing the Seattle-based tech giant’s sales in Q2 2020 by 40% from last year and doubling its profits over the same period.

Amazon’s stock price has risen more than 90% since the start of the year, making its founder and CEO Jeff Bezos the richest person in the world.
