The academy moved on to online learning, and from there they did virtually all they could with hair and aesthetics.

“It was quite a process and hard trying to get used to doing everything on Zoom. And everything that’s going on in the world you’re not sure and it’s hard to focus but it was actually really good, ”Jacy said. Chat News.

With restrictions and closures, Jacy graduated in April, two more months from the program’s regular schedule.

She was also able to get a job as a hairdresser in the city.

Although Jacy passed the online courses, it is a hands-on industry.

Students practice on both mannequins and clients entering their studio.

“You don’t know if you’re going to be as good as, because we haven’t had as much training on people, but actually I ended up getting a job right away and I’m doing it. very good, ”Jacy added.

Meanwhile, Nisrine continued her online learning for the makeup portion of the program.

She is originally from Lebanon and has lived in Medicine Hat for 10 years.

Nisrine waited until she could return to the academy for the hairdressing part so that she could have a more hands-on experience.

“It’s hard for me to do everything online, it’s speech, and not language anymore,” Nisrine explained.

Nisrine says she should be graduating now and that she should graduate at the end of the month.

But she wants a little more practice to feel more confident when applying for salon jobs.

“I don’t know how it will work because even if I graduate I come back to school to do more on people because we don’t have enough people,” Nisrine added.

The province’s open-close model over the past year has also affected the number of academy clients.

Nisrine says there was a shortage and they haven’t had so many customers since before the pandemic.

Now, at the end of June, the beauty academy has largely returned to normal and the students are happy to be in the salon to hone their skills.

“It’s much better, I like the hands on my hair and stuff, it should be on the floor, right?”
