Facing another setback in an already difficult season, Lionel Messi has found his final touch to prevent Barcelona from falling further behind in the Spanish league.

Messi’s late goal secured a relentless 1-0 home win over Levante on Sunday to end a two-defeat slippage for Barcelona.

Messi unleashed a left-footed shot from the far post and into the net to secure Barcelona’s breakthrough in the 76th minute after Levante held off the hosts with tenacious defense.

“The teams are focused on defending Messi, scoring him with several players, but today he proved decisive,” Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman said.

Barcelona’s victory came after the surprise last-round loss to Cadiz and a 3-0 home loss to Juventus in the Champions League.

Barcelona still have a long way to go to get back in the title race, but they have managed to regain some ground after leaders Real Sociedad and Atlético Madrid both dropped points this weekend. Barcelona are in eighth place, nine points behind the leaders. Barcelona and Atlético have played two games less than Sociedad.

Koeman will be hoping the win will cement a side he struggles to rebuild on the fly this season, ahead of his crucial Wednesday game when Sociedad come to Camp Nou.

“Our situation in the league meant that we had to win to make the difference,” said Koeman. “Today was very, very important to win this game. I hope that will give us a boost of confidence for Wednesday’s game.

Levante goalkeeper Aitor Fernández kept Levante in the game with several saves to prevent Messi, Martin Braithwaite, Antoine Griezmann and Jordi Alba.

Messi finally beat Fernández with his 10th shot of the game. It was created by Frenkie de Jong after the Dutch midfielder and Braithwaite stole Mickael Malsa’s possession in Levante’s half.

Fernández got his hands on Messi’s powerful strike, but not enough to keep him out.

“It was a shame I couldn’t hit his shot more,” said Fernández, whose side remained in the relegation zone. “We made a mistake and it led to their goal.”

SOCIEDAD BACK TO TOP

Sociedad returned to the top of the table after a 1-1 draw at home with Eibar.

The San Sebastian-based club equalized Atlético in points and climbed to first place in total goals scored, with both sides having the same goal difference.

Atlético suffered their first loss of the season on Saturday, losing 2-0 to city rivals Real Madrid.

Ander Barrenetxea put Sociedad ahead in the 20th with a powerful shot from the edge of the box. The 18-year-old forward pounced on a clearance and hit the ball off the crossbar and into the net.

Eibar improved in the second half thanks to playmaker Bryan Gil. The Sevilla-loaned midfielder scored the equalizer in the 65th minute after dribbling past two defenders on the left and crossing for Takashi Inui, who framed the ball for half-time substitute Sergi Enrich.

Despite leading the way, Sociedad coach Imanol Alguacil wants his side to retain their status as underdogs in the title race.

“I hope they keep quiet about us and that in a few months we will still be on top,” said Alguacil.
