Robert Lewandowski netted twice as Bayern Munich cruised to the Club World Cup final with a controlled 2-0 win over Egyptian club Al Ahly on Monday.

Bayern were in firm control in the semi-final against the African champions and took the lead in the 17th minute when David Alaba spotted Lewandowski in space in the penalty area to hammer in a low shot.

Lewandowski missed a chance for 2-0 when he sent a lob over the bar with only the keeper to beat late in the first half, but made up for it with a header from Leroy Sané’s cross at the 86th.

In Thursday’s final, Hansi Flick’s side will face Mexican club Tigres, who beat Brazilians Palmeiras 1-0 on Sunday. This made the Tigers the first CONCACAF team to reach a Club World Cup final.

Bayern are playing for what would be their sixth title in 12 months after the German league and cup, the Champions League and the German and European Super Cups.

The Club World Cup is usually a low-intensity way for the Champions League winner to add another trophy to their collection against opponents with relatively tiny budgets. Bayern’s only Club World Cup title to date in 2013, beating Morocco’s Raja Casablanca in the final, kicked off a seven-game winning streak by European sides.

Playing in Qatar meant a drastic change in temperature for Bayern. The German team played in the snow at Hertha Berlin on Friday before flying out to the gas-rich Middle Eastern nation, where daytime temperatures in recent days have been near 30 degrees (86 F).

Bayern have long-standing sponsorship ties with Qatar and have frequently held training camps there, in opposition of some fan groups concerned about human rights in the host country of the 2022 World Cup.
