For English speaking Sega fans Fantastic Star Online 2, the past 8 years have been a roller coaster of hope, frustration and relief. Today, that adventure ends as PSO2 exits beta status and launches on Xbox One in North America. While the popular Action RPG has enjoyed both a closed and open beta on Microsoft’s console, we can finally call it official and start fighting Falspawn for good. But when can PC gamers get started? Well Sega has revealed the release date, but it comes with some disappointing news.

PSO2 will launch on PCs in North America (although anyone can play it regardless of physical location as it is not region-locked) “late May” 2020. Exclusively on the Microsoft Store.

All of those big headlines you might have seen on the game’s Steam launch when it hits PC have only been rendered hopeful rumors.

The good news is that cross play between Xbox One and PC gamers will be activated as soon as it goes live on the Microsoft Store.

“Phantasy Star Online 2 changed the history of online action RPGs; the sci-fi story, characters and gameplay resonated with gamers around the world and we are now delighted to offer North American players this special game – for free Our gaming community is the heart and soul of the game and we could not have made it without their continued support and passion.

Fred White, Marketing Manager for PSO2 TEAM North America.

It expands the free-to-play RPG to a much wider audience and I’m grateful for it, but its presence on Steam will be sorely missed.

Sega is vague on the details at this time, but I suspect it will eventually land on Valve’s PC platform after a one-year (maximum) period of exclusivity on Microsoft’s platforms. At this point, we should also see PSO2 drop to PlayStation 4 and possibly Nintendo’s Switch as a cloud-based title.
