Overview

Michael Conforto and his New York Mets sprinted to celebrate the World Series title.

While it was a spring training defensive drill, in their minds it was Game 7 of the World Series – and the New York Daily News captured it on video. That’s because first baseman coach Tony Tarrasco told them to simulate the ultimate game of the sport.

“It’s fun to have a day of camp like this and see the guys ramping up the intensity at game speed and also simulating our biggest goal,” Mets manager Luis Rojas said Wednesday. .

The drill consisted of making 27 consecutive error-free defensive takeouts as Rojas and Tarrasco hit fungoes.

New York last won the World Series in 1986, when the Mets rallied with three runs in the 10th inning to beat Boston in Game 6 at Mookie Wilson’s home court past Bill Buckner, then overcame a deficit of three points to win Game 7.

“It’s gotten really intense. That’s our goal here. We’re here because we want to win the championship,” Rojas said. “We want to celebrate. We want to bring it to the families, to the organization. I I’ve been here for 15 years It would be a dream come true, to see it and see everyone celebrating like this.

Rojas said right-hander Carlos Carrasco wasn’t sure if he was ready for the start of the season after elbow pain forced him to stop throwing. It won’t launch again until the end of next week.

RED

Joey Votto went on the injured list after testing positive for COVID-19. He will be absent from the team for at least 10 days according to health and safety protocols.

MARLINS

The Marlins’ leading pitcher, Sixto Sanchez, whose progress at camp was delayed by a false positive in a COVID-19 test, is scheduled for a pitching session on Thursday. The Marlins will wait to see how he fares before deciding if he’s ready to make his spring training debut, general manager Kim Ng said.

Sanchez was 3-2 with a 3.46 ERA in seven starts last year and pitched five innings against the Chicago Cubs in the playoffs.

Another Miami pitching prospect, Jorge Guzman, was sidelined with an inflamed right elbow.

YANKEES

New York Yankees southpaw Zack Britton is scheduled to undergo surgery Monday to remove a bone splinter from his throwing elbow and looks likely to be out until at least May.

Britton will be unable to pitch for several weeks while the incision heals after Yankees team physician Dr. Christopher Ahmad’s surgery at New York-Presbyterian Hospital. Briton will then have to build up his arm strength.

ATHLETICS

Right-hander Mike Fiers is being held back by a back problem that manager Bob Melvin noted “he’s probably a bit further behind right now” despite throwing a few mock games and going several innings.

“We kind of shut it down for a few days,” Melvin said.

NATIONALS 3, CARDINALS 2

Max Scherzer’s second start to spring training went about as well as it could, with five strikeouts in three perfect innings for Washington in a 3-2 win over St. Louis.

“I was able to get a little more intensity today and was just able to hammer the strike zone and not walk around people. Try to give them a pitch to hit and see what happens,” said the three-time Cy Young Award winner. “It’s spring. Try to get readings on some swings.

Although manager Dave Martinez said afterward that he wasn’t ready to announce his first opening day, he certainly liked what he saw — and heard — from Scherzer.

“Usually when he throws the ball well enough he lets out a few grunts. He did it several times today, so that was encouraging,” Martinez said with a laugh. “We are going in the right direction with Max.”

Nationals second baseman Starlin Castro, who missed most of 2020 after breaking his right wrist, hit a two-run homer against Jack Flaherty in the fourth and an RBI triple against Johan Ovideo in the sixth.
