Coty partners with LanzaTech to use carbon-capture ethanol in fragrances

Quotedscientists from worked alongside LanzaTech and production partners over the past two years to develop high purity sustainable ethanol which is suitable for use in perfumes. Based on these efforts, Quoted intends to incorporate captured ethanol into its fragrance manufacturing process, with the aim of having the majority of its fragrance portfolio using carbon-captured ethanol by 2023.

Almost zero water consumption

Ethanol is an essential ingredient in perfumes, allowing effective dispersion of perfume. Like most other perfume producers, Quoted uses ethanol from a range of natural feedstocks – including sugar cane and sugar beets, which require farmland, water and fertilizer.

The use of a new generation of ethanol from carbon capture Needs almost zero water consumption and reduces the need for agricultural land. Work with the independent sustainability consultancy Quantis, Quoted has carried out a preliminary life cycle assessment which shows a significantly reduced overall environmental impact.

Carbon recycling

To produce this next generation sustainable ethanol, LanzaTech captures carbon from different emission sources (industry, solid organic waste) or even from the ambient air, thanks to an electrolysis process. The CO2 collected is then purified before being transformed into ethanol by fermentation.

The partnership with LanzaTech is an important step for Quoted as it continues its journey to become a more circular business. The company’s “Beauty that Lasts” strategy defines a series of time-bound goals, including a 30% reduction in absolute CO2 emissions by 2030.

Carbon recycling is making significant progress and is emerging as an environmentally attractive alternative to agricultural carbon. At the end of last year, LanzaTech, Total and L’Oréal have announced the production of the first plastic cosmetic bottle produced with industrial carbon emissions.
