The New York State Department of Labor reminds those receiving unemployment benefits to actively participate in “job search activities.”

On his twitter account, the Department of Labor reminded New Yorkers of this requirement, explaining what qualifies as “job search activities.” These include filling out and submitting job applications, attending networking seminars and interviewing for open positions. People receiving unemployment benefits “…must perform at least three job search activities each week”:

That Peak is part of the reason some have been allowed to remain unemployed and not lose their benefits, despite not actively looking for work, as required by the Labor Department, according to an article on Syracuse.com :

While New York hasn’t waived the requirements, it was largely a technicality over the past year as businesses shuttered and unemployment hit record highs. At one point, 1.4 million people were out of work. The state could barely process claims, let alone control requirements that are rarely enforced in more prosperous times.

The latest data for the Mohawk Valley available on the New York State Department of Labor Statistics website shows that the Utica-Rome Metropolitan Area (MSA) has an unemployment rate of 6.0% . That’s down from 7.0% in March this year and well down from 16.3% in April 2020.

From April last year to April 2021, the county of non-farm payrolls jumped 12% (from 12,700) to over 118,000. Jobs considered private sector Private sector employment increased 15% (from 11,500) to almost 89,000.

Through the New York State Department of Labor:

…recreation and hospitality (+3,900), commerce, transportation and utilities (+3,200), government (+1,200), manufacturing (+1,000), professional and business services (+1,000), natural resources , mining and construction (+900), education and health services (+700), other services (+700) and financial activities (+200).
